Hi all,

Anyone have experience modifying mics? Im doing David Royer's MXL603 tube mod, and now the mic sounds funny...

First, it works, but has a kind of 'tinny' ring to it - I removed a large plastic plug that was between the capsule and the PCP (I didnt modify the capsule) - I think this is causing some sort of resonant ringing. Should i try and add some sort of limp mass? What about making a wooden body. Could be cool...

Secondly, the B+ voltage to the anode is only about 60VDC, but it should be 95VDC. Darn. I really have to push up the preamp to get decent levels. Ive checked the wiring, but havnt found a problem yet...If someone would like to see the schematic, I can post it

Any help would be most appreciated...
Patrick

You've got to leave that plastic plug in. It's actually shaped and sized for a purpose. You did that trying to make it sound less empty-garbage-can-resonant (to put words in your mouth), or you did it and caused the problem?

I bet it would sound quite ringy and strange with it out. The pattern will be all confused, too. I can't imagine that it sounds better out, but you'll have to be the judge of that.

I don't know why you aren't getting the voltage you want. It looks like Mojave Audio took down the DIY article .pdfs they used to have posted. I wouldn't try a different body.

I did this mod (with help and advice) and you are right to worry about the low output. It's not supposed to be that way. Did you deviate from the parts list or circuit? I went with some scavenged parts, and it still worked fairly well in the end.

I had built their large diapharam kit before, so for this one (the sdc) I assembled all the parts on my own. No pcb boards, so wiring is the big culperate. Does the actual shape of the insert make a difference? could I put something else in there?
