DIY S/PDIF AD/DA for audio measurements?

I had the idea to "build" (most likely add onto a ready made converter board) a S/PDIF AD/DA converter specifically for audio measurements, to plug into mine or any other existing audio interface and bypass its converters and input circuitry with something that hopefully performs very well, i'd also very much like not to build a clock :D. My main thoughts were really a) would i be stupid to DIY this seeing as i have no high end equipment for measuring resulting performance, b) i was thinking of either having one balanced in/out XLR and one DC coupled unbalanced in/out BNC or XLR+BNC on both ins/outs. For the balanced side, my first thought was transformer balancing, mainly because i have several Neutrik NTL-1s on hand (used in the TT402 for instance) but also because galvanic isolation and quick and easy true balancing, but also because i frankly don't know enough to trust myself to build high grade electronically balanced in/out circuitry. Would this be considered a stupid idea in the current technological landscape? As for the BNC ins/outs, i guess i'd like to measure DC components and also just have the minimal possible path in and out of the converters, would that generally be considered sensical? Specific ideas on implementation? Thoughts regarding converter chips and codecs, or applicable ready-made boards?

Keep in mind that a lot of audio A/D converters do not have good DC response. That would be something to consider when evaluating the specs, but it may be worthwhile having a separate device if you really want to include DC measurements in the design.

Yeah i was was gonna consider that specifically when looking for a converter, although to be frank true i'm more concerned about very low frequency performance and minimal input circuitry than true DC performance
