EW July 1959 is what I think you meant by "basic dc coupled pair". Q2 Emitter drives Q1 Base to set DC bias for both. We find this idea in scads of phono preamps, also (misused) in the FuzzFace guitar pedal.

Yes, EW 59 has a third transistor but it is just hanging there.

That is right. All the elements are there. It is a short step to move one end of C3 to the emitter of the emitter follower and from there only a small step to realising you can close that loop at dc with a split resistor in its emitter - and then you have the basic Neve circuit.
