I had always assumed that these were mechanically the same and you could swap - of course the circuits are not quite identical - but having looked carefully at some pictures, it looks like the U48 needs three connection pins,

and the U47 only has two....
And of course to do figure of 8 in the conventional way you need 3 voltages, so three pins makes sense.
Can anyone with a 'real' U48 please confirm this, or otherwise?
