It was a dsub(male or female connection) on a PCB that connected to 2 ethernet connections.
Since guys like rat sound do 4 X xlr's to Ethernet, why not do 2 and have a full 8 channels.
What was most impressive about it was it could be connected to the rear of a patchbay which had dsubs so you could have 12 X ethernet cables carrying 48 points of a patchbay. Not bad at all. Much more economical too.
