Picked up a set of earbuds to try as studio headphone monitors. The fiddle players were having hard time with headphones and holding onto their instruments so I snagged earbuds to try and help them. Problem is are these personnel items like a harmonica or is there a method to sterilize them between different users? Ear canals are not the most sanitary place. I'm miffed should each user have his/her own set.

I'd say don't share. But the "rubber" inserts are usually removable (and available in different sizes) so could remove and disinfect I think ? Bit like disinfecting vocal mics.
OTOH the players might be happier providing their own personal earbuds.

Im not sure how studios run things post covid , but Id certainly have reservations about sharing someones head cheesed earbuds , headphones with vinyl earpads can be swabbed down with isopropyl at least .

The rubber inserts or foam inserts are removable, so change those when a new user uses them.
I much prefer to use Memory Foam (like the next photo) material than rubber:

KZ brand, makes a lot of good ear-bud/in-ears for a very affordable price
