EF98 is a low-voltage pentode.
Correct, aka 6ET6. Philips manual has ratings for it as an a.f. driver w/ grid 3 strapped to anode. Philips rating for EF86, grid 2 to anode, grid 3 to cathode are pretty different. WHich is not to say the EF98 isn't worth checking out, it's very much worth checking out, imo, thanks for the tip.
BTW, the dual triode I mentioned above has some decent pedigree, if you find GEs ask the vendor to look for typical Mullard date codes at the bottom edge of the tube. Some are screened to read Made in Holland (Amperex for Mullard) and others read Made in W Germany. Some 6ET6s are probably similar, used in Blaupunkt radios. I'll try to research car radio tubes altogether and see what I can come up with. Could make a very nice hi-fi pre-amp tube.

1 something 4 and 1 something 5. IIRC are pentode diode tubes at car voltage. I can't rember the numbers
Gus, I have a 1AG4 submini, I haven't fiddled w/it yet. Do you want to check out those 5678 submini pentodes? Direct heated on grid 3, 1.25V filament, typical class A 45V plate. Flat press, five leads, and they've got an integral shield, this metalized rubbery paint, tied to the filament negative lead. Could try it for your phantom power tube mic thing.
