Ethics of selling DIY to friends..

I just thought it a bit tasteless to be copying the FXG384 logo from the SSL website and having it screened onto a frontpanel. Even using the words Solid State Logic or anything like that. Hell, you can't really call the Gyraf 'Pultec' a 'Pultec', since it's not! Pultec was a company that amde many products. It's a passive EQ based on the Pultec EQP1A with a very different gain stage from what i can see in the schematic. I'm new to this, and i don't mean to step on anyone's toes or point any fingers. It just crossed me as being morally and ethically *very* wrong. There really should be a clear rule for using these schematics. am I alone in thinking this? If you like the physical look of something, hell, go for it. I love the older Neve style and might use blue paint and marconies on everything I build, but the "N-word" won't be anywhere on them. That would be disrespectful to the gentlemen whom we're copying.

Really, I don't like if some people sell
Gyraf stuff like their own..... :twisted:

From the other side. I designed some micpre's
(just polishing an ideas; you cannot (still)
simulate in Circuitmaker sound of your handwound transformer)
and feel very good selling them after I listened and recorded through 'em.

Same thing was when I did my 1176 layout and a friend asked
if I can make him another one (reason: he heard gyraf's 1176;
he can solder this pcb, he even have test setup-but he wanted my
layout and work and some tweakups to orig.).
I asked relatively high price, so high,
that he will not feel himself buying ripoff of 11'76 for less money;
and he was agree.

If I have free time after work(repairman/tech/engineer
at small audio company), I make my own stuff/try to tweak up other's.
I sold some my designs in Israel-

So, why not to sell stuff, if you have a hobby, ****, you need some money to pay for parts & etc!

BUT COMPLETELY HATE THINGS LIKE STUPID ********
SELL CRAPPY WORK AS BRAND AND OTHER'S DESIGNS
LIKE THEIR OWNS!!!!

Agree totally.

And on top of that, he claims to have God on his side - and that really hacked me off.

In the past (and I'm talking decades ago) a friend of mine bought a complete kit of parts for a tape recorder (ready-made mechanics, but you had to construct the electronics yourself), got it out of the box, took one look at it, put it all back, and asked me if I'd build it for him - which I did, for a small fee. He didn't quibble the amount, and we were both happy with the deal. And so -

I think that basically, he's right - this is fundamentally the same ethics, only in the current climate. Who actually bought the bits, and whether it was a 'kit' or not is irrelevant - this is, unlike the eBay clown's attempt, a perfectly moral way to proceed. And just to reiterate, in case it's not absolutely clear, this SmG has NOTHING to do with that SMGAUDIO...

I would Never sell any DIY to a friend.
Why?
Because if they have a problem with it, they will end up hassling you.
Or, they may want more!
Kind of like working on your friend's car. Once you fix it the first time, anytime they have a problem, they will always come back to you, and you end up being that person's mechanic for the rest of your life!
It got so bad with a mechanic friend of mine, he finally had to start charging his friends 25 bucks an hour to do moonlight mechanical repair.

and summing bus after,
he/she OF COURSE have problems with copyright laws ))
BTW, NO circuit that CANNOT be figured out from application notes/
old books....just the way it tweaked/polished will be different.
If term "vary'muu" copyrighted, anyone cannot built
BETTER/ANOTHER compressor based at the same principe?
Bull$hit.
But, other side: ripoffs are bad thing.
IMHO, if someone built and sell some stuff,
it must be at least better done than originals in case of clones
(rare thing ))
or must be originally design.

I came from Russia. In this place there's no copyrights.
Whole country overloaded with freaks who make/tweakup things as
he/she can. DIY'ed cars? Anything. What about ~2kW co2 laser????

So, please tell me what's the ethics in takin' (let's consider for a moment
with all this copypastenwrite stuff) someone's circuit (let's say 1176)
and downgrading it to oep level trafos for everyone's but not
manufacturer's benefit?
Now, we talkin' about ethics about selling DIY'ed stuff ))
Les say, I love an idea of givin' to the people an ability to make highly
desireble 1176 by themselves, but at this point you cannot stop
uggly issues with selling of ripoffs...BTW....

What about DIY of your own design (not a clone)? Other than regulatory (UL, CSA, CE, TUV) or insurance issues? I would think that's ok. Except for the 'build me another' part.
