I recall discussion about non-typical ways to use back-electret mic elements, however I can not find the relevant thread.
Does anybody recall this or have any pointers?

I have used electrets in regular circuits with external polarization, with no apparent negative effects. My favorite live mic i've made is like this. However i'm not sure about the theory behind this in case you flip the polarity. I just knew the backplate on the capsule was electret, so i polarized the backplate. I didn't experiment and try to polarize the diaphragm.

I think Scott Dorsey or someone else (not Scott Helmke though) published that kind of microphone with an electret capsule using external bias.
