Hi everyone. The board is at 3nity's place right now. The last correction I found 3nity has implemented and according to him seemed to correct the problem I was experiencing. Once I get it into my studio and give it a listening test I can continue on.

I have to say that I am thinking of doing a 2nd prototype as I have since added some changes. One is a relay based normal bypass (the way its done on original). reason for that is that you can then use 1 switch for both bypasses. I found a real nifty one with 3 positions. ON-OFF-ON. It has 2 LED colors. The idea is that left is normal bypass, center is bypass off and right is hard bypass (input direct to output). Of course this will be up to you to implement or not so it won't impact your pocket if you don't want to use it.

Also since the corrections are also in the latest layout it goes without saying that that this new PCB should be checked as well before being released. However I'm confident that that one will go very quickly and its just for final 100% verification.

The EQ sounds great. I especially like the LF and midrange controls. A very useful and classic sounding EQ for sure.

Thanks again for all of you that have emailed me with interest and encouragements.

I would like to have two boards as well.

Respect to Jim for holding on since dec 2007!

Thinking of building a 3U stereo: 2x martin's 1290 + 2x Jim's 1084. Just need to make an inserts for the gyraf 1176's. 5u monster tracking machine!

Here is a photo I just took of the prototype. The case is Dan's. There are no legends yet on the front panel. Dan will be selling full cases with finished custom front panel (silkscreened front and back) for this 1084EQ.

Introductory price of $87.00 U.S. for the first 30 orders.

So, what's the price after the first 30 orders?  and what is included in that price?

Hi Chuck, after the first 30 its $104.00 each. Paypal and shipping fee is extra.

Checked out your music. Very nice. Do you do any long distance sessions? Let me know.

I just want to tell everyone that I had the project analyzed a few days ago and it passed with flying colors! All the frequency bands were dead on! I was a bit worried about the LP filter but I guess my ears don't go to 16K! Measuring instruments do and the filter worked exactly as it should.

There is still some work for me left to do. The Gain switch is 7 steps as in the original but I find the 5db steps too coarse so I will be using the 12 steps in the Grayhill switch to spread the gain over 12 positions rather than 7.

I've also added a relay option to the normal (NEVE) bypass. This allows to use 1 switch (found a very cool one with 2 color LED in toggle paddle).

Dan and I have been putting the final touches on the front panel and I'll have a picture of that soon.

Lastly, after seeing the unit and the test results I've been asked to demo the unit at a local commercial studio. This will give me the opportunity to get someone else's opinion as well.

After that I will be ordering a new prototype PCB so I can confirm final layout.

So there is a bit more time to wait but its great to not have to debug and be going forward now.

Special thanks to 3nity who helped me tremendously with his support and finding several problems. I was getting a bit discouraged and I could not have gone this far without his encouragement and skills. Thanks Jorge.

Also thanks to all who posted here or sent private emails of encouragement. You all kept this project alive.

I guess it's $104 for the pcb, right?

I was wondering, is there is an option to add a mic pre, either by connecting an EZ1290 post input-transformer and line-amp, or on the board itself?

cheers

Its only the PCB with build instructions and BOM.

Colin at Audiomaintenance said he would be stocking the inductors, transformers (which he does mostly now) and also the Grayhills. Colin would have to confirm that however so check with him.

3nity showed some interest in providing the rest of the parts as a kit but again he would have t confirm that.

Dan (see whitemarket) will be providing the front panels with case.

Martin will be making the optional mike pre part and I believe he is calling it the EZ1290LE (light edition). This part has not been tested yet. I will be in touch with Martin shortly to see if I can get a test pcb.

Martin will probably be providing the mike preamp part to mate to this EQ. The 1084EQ has provision for his pcb. However we have not tested this part yet.

If you have a EZ1290 now you can still use it as is (and just go into the 1084EQ but that is a lot of XFRs) or bypass most of the output section and go into the 1084EQ. Either Martin or I will have to provide that info.

More concrete news of this will come soon.

We stock the transformers, inductors and Grayhills anyway.... I'll create a "kit" with a single part number for ease of ordering...... if Jim emails me a BOM I'll look at adding the electrolytics, wimas and transistors as well (but not resistors unless there is an unusual value like 4M7).
