Hi
Recently i bought 100k log pots from Monacor, thought i'll reverse them, and get 100k rev log pots for G-Calrec. When the pots arrived i've noticed that they are marked 5L4 A100K, which led me to believe that they are lin not log pots. Being a newbie, i did not complain, thought it might be one of those "no standard" situation...
Now that i finished one ch. of Calrec pots don't behave as expected. If i reverse them, they reverse the action as well going from HI to LO CW, if i use them as stock they make no change to a sound turned half way CW and the go from LO to HI. The pots are to be used as freq. dials. The question is: are they LIN pots  :?: Otherwise EQ works, and i love the sound...

Thank you

There are at least three different "standards" for pot taper letters.

> The question is: are they LIN pots

Set the knob exactly in the middle and measure from wiper to each end. If "same", it is Linear. If about a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio, it is 20% audio; 10:1 ratio, 10% audio taper.

Imagine you mount it in a radio and wire it "normally". The end the wiper touches at full-up clockwise goes to signal source, the end the wiper touches at CCW full-down goes to ground, and take signal from the wiper. Set the knob exactly in the middle. If it gets 10%-20% signal, it is common audio taper, as used in radio Volume controls to handle a 100:1 range of station-strengths and listening levels without having to work down in the crack above "0". If it would give 90% signal connected this way, it is Reverse Audio, suitable for active-gain controls and frequency knobs.

You can use a Normal Audio Taper where you really want a Reverse Audio, if you switch the two end leads, flop the knob scale, AND switch the habits in your head. Turn clockwise for 100Hz, counter-clockwise for 10KHz. Turn clockwise to "turn down the gain". Try it. It feels wrong.

It should not be that difficult. The "volume control" on a kitchen stove works opposite to a radio volume control. Turn counter-clockwise to get bigger gas/electric fire and bigger boil. Yet most people get very befuddled when a "radio" (any electronic toy) works this way.

The Gas Cooker Preamp uses stove knobs which appear to be backwards like PRR sez. They must have gotten the same wrong pot shipment.=)

We've discussed markings on pots several times before.

European standard like 10KA - with the letter after value: A=Lin, B=Log
Asian standard like A10K - vith the letter before value: A=Log, B=Lin

If you're still unsure,m PRR's model is always the safe way to check.

Done the testing, and yes they are LOG pots. Due to the construction of the pots i can't open them and reverse (have seen "how to" on Gyraf site), so i'll have to live with reverse frq. scale until i get new pots.

Thank you very much. :thumb:

funny, today i was at the local music store and saw this preamp. the scale doesnt move but the knob inside, so it works clockwise.

Just a quick question. I have a potentiometer marked "C500K" in the schematics. So what characteristics is this ? Rev log ?

Thanks

Asian standard like A10K - with the letter before value: A=Log, B=Lin

as Jakob pointed out. What is that pot used for? If it is for freq. than it
is probably rev log pot.

cheerz

ufff wouldn't know anything about "drive" controls, probably introduces some sort of distortion.post the shemo so someone will check it up for you.sorry.
