Hi all,
I just finished a matched pair of g-peq1a with best components i fought...don-audio for most of parts, including the 4mm blue panel, the filters caps and the da-ef inductors.. But i ask myself about changing thoses units for ezp1a or drip pultecs.. Do you think i would really have an improvement ?
Thanks a lot.

You just finished them and already think about replacing them? Are they that bad?
I own a EZ MEQ-5 and it's great but I'm also building a PQD2 (dual G-pultec) right now and only expect great results.
Can't speak for the Drip EQ but also only heard good things about it.
But what exactly is it what you don't like about the g-pultecs?

Thanks for your reply murdock. I found that i lose somerhing in the high, even in bypass mode. I tried mullard nos, siemens nos, jj as original bom, and a lot of others...i spent about 300eu in tubes...and my plug in still works better..even if i would prefer to work with the hw. The tube tech pe1c i tried was so better than every plug ins bit i really want to build all of my units. I found it brokes my chain..

one of the common "features" of allot of this classic gear is a soft top end

you can easily make things shine again tho, boost the 12K or 18K, and use your high-atten to tweek to taste

your plugins don't work "better", they work differently ;) ...these bits of kit have their place when you know what sound you are looking for and how to get it

maybe the only one tube vs 2 tubes, i do not really know, but the sound is . So for you G-Peq1 is as good as Drip or AML ?...it is hard for me to believe it, regarding the sound samples on youtube...

I mean the filters aren't that different, it's the make-up amp that is. With no boost/cut, taking the G-peq out of bypass only slightly attenuates the top end, but still stays very flat before using the eq. I thought it was pretty flattering and expected of a unit like this. I like it, honestly. Have you used an original Pultec before?

i've never played with the drip or AML, only the original pultec, manley remake, and my own g-pultec

preference for one or the other is largely subjective (or technical if for eg you want a properly matched stereo unit)

how the g-pultec sounds depends not just on the circuit, but the type of inductors & tubes that are used, originally I had TOKO inductors, now i have don-audio custom inductors, the difference it makes to the sound is quite something; i've so far only tried 3 different tubes, again all have very different characters

top end as I said isn't an issue; i'm currently mastering a drum and bass EP using my g-pultec, and i'm getting beautifully sparkly top end and huge bottom end, just as it should be :) ...not sure i would want to try that with a pair of original pultecs (no clue how closely they matched components)

i sold my g-pultec, still one in the rack, but i wait for the 2 drip eqp1a to see if i like them..
