As I said in another thread I think it is time to dedicate a thread exclusively to our female forum members and their DIY constructions.
We know we have here at least five girls because they were active.
I think it would be great to encourage them.
So come on, don't lurk anymore. Introduce yourselves and show us your DIY projects or your DIY plans. Also some words would be nice about what you do in the music business/hobby.

Agreed. This has almost been a boys-only audio dork club. Let's let the girl audio dorks be happy here, too.

Geeks and Dweebies of all Sexes, Colors, Creeds and Nationalities, UNITE!

Except Michael Jackson. He's soooo not allowed. :green:

for verification purposes, all females must send pics to me before they post. these pics must utilize a ceiling fan, rubber gloves, and chunky peanut butter.

use your minds. i'll leave it at that.

um I dunno what to make of that but I got a few ideas that come to mind.
In the interest of real discussion I happen to think women make better engineers because the tend to pay more attention to detail.
Unless, your initals are EM

By the way,

A bunch of people here seem to have a gripe against EM... what's so bad about her?? Apart from being a little bit hypey and self advertising and not actually designing the gear... EM's stuff is actually quite good... The Massive Passive sounds good to me, and the pultecs sound great as well!

Hi everyone! Girl here.
I am working on Jakob Erland / Gyraf DIY tube mic project.
- see http://www.gyraf.dk/ and click the "DIY" link

this is my first project. I love Diy. I even want to make my own capsule.

I think I might want to make an LA2a next. I have heard that they are great for G i r l s vocals.

any othe Girl Power projects out there?

Women are welcome and encouraged in every thread on this board.

But as you can see, none have yet posted to this thread :)
We might as well face facts, the world of engineering is largely a sausage fest.

Kato

Eveanna is nice.

 don't remind me.
Girls have posted b4 just not as in high numbers as boys.
wait a minute why are we even making an issue out of this.
It's not about sex, race, color, or creed, lets just do some good old fashion DIY.

dude, no lie. i'd like to see whos doing their design of gear and artistic work. and slap them in the face with a medium sized object. i know this is a pretty technical field. but GEEZ, manley gear is f'ing UGLY as anything. straight from the 80's and overglam.
i'm a strickler for good design, going to an art school and all. maybe they will hire me when i get done soon?!

Hmm..

ASM and Pucho, could you keep potentially offending comments a bit lower? Not that this is the worst of examples, but we'd like to keep the tone here on the right track - and we'd definitely not want to scare away any diy'ing girls by letting the forum tone get rough

We'd really like to get the other half of the world into DIY as well..

 Hang on a bit! I'll get my camera working this weekend.

Hi everyone,
I just got my camera working and put up a few more pics at:
http://www.3ealities.com/downloads.html

Basically I just started diy about 1 year ago because being a guitarplayer, I was so fed up with paying ridiculous prices for stompboxes. I did not know anything about electronics (and I really mean that, I had even forgotten most of what I should have learned at school  ). I wish, I knew more but I´ve been reading around this place a lot, many times I cannot really follow everything, but I´m learning. This forum has become my favorite place on the web, I just love it! Very nice people here and soooo interesting, especially for someone like me, who´s basically unemployed and could never ever afford gear like that.

I have been working as a leadguitar player for many years in my hometown of Munich, Germany. But I spent also 2 years in Hollywood where I studied (at GIT) and then played gigs. Mostly Country stuff. But payment has become so horrible in the last couple of years, I taught myself 3d graphics + animation software, got some jobs there, but not much either.
Since 2 years I got more into recording and also Dance music (House, Trance ...). I´m writing my own songs (very commercial german music, really stupid stuff). Hoped I could sell some, but the music industry in Germany is not going well at all ...).

So while sitting at home and not having any work, at least I try to learn something and I´ve become really addicted at diy. Only bad thing now is, that I cannot build as much as I´d like to for financial reasons
But the next thing will definetely be a SSL Clone.

I would also like to hear from other "fellow" female diy´ers, so this is an interesting thread. Although normally I keep a low profile, because for my lack of knowledge I cannot really contribute a lot, just learning ....

Reggie,

would you mind explaning a little about the binaurals you made?
Seems like a "got to have" for my portable MD as well.
I'd love to take it with me to tape prospect and clients drafts in rehearsalrooms, before having them in my studio.
Do you think your DIY's can take that kind of loudness (metaaaal btw  )?

Cool pictures btw! I hope to get some stuff finished to, so i can post some pictures in the near future...

Cheers,

Tony

Another request for more info on the binaural mics.
Having them fit in your own ears is friggin? genius. :thumb: :guinness: :guinness:
I had always wanted a way to walk around the street with them, but not be noticed.

Well here we are. My camera is a cheapy so the pictures don't come up to the quality you guys seem to get. This was my first diy project and it turned out quite well if I do say so myself. The first picture is the Calrec in my acoustic guitar rack, the unit on top is a Raven Labs preamp blender which i use to mix a Sunise mag pickup and a k.k sbt pickup, the reverb unit is an old Quadraverb. The Calrec works great on acoustic guitar to sculpt the sound. The oblong slots on the back are to add a terminal post so the powersupply can run another Calrec.
The unit was built on a budget using surplus parts and the cabinet is part of the chassis from a vibration testing machine  that i picked up from the local dump (sorry 'waste management centre'). Next project is going to be to Seventh Circle J99 preamps and there's some La2a starting to take shape.

GREAT Vikki!

Am i the only one to notice this or, do girls build better gear?
 Cabling is done very well!

:thumb:

Good luck with that LA2A

Cheers,

Tony

Vikki,
I really like your Calrec, looks great! How long did it take you to build ? And did it work right the first time you turned it on? That´s another one I would love to build. I think it´s a good idea to look around the garbage once in a while, can save you a lot of money and you can find beautiful stuff.

Those binaural mics are really simple. Basically there´s nothing inside the pens but the capsule and some foam to hold it all together. But I´m using it with my Sony MD which works great. There is not so much info on the web about building those and if I remember correctly, if you do not use them with a Sony MD you might have to add some electronics inside. I have to look if I can still find the info.

Do you think your DIY's can take that kind of loudness (metaaaal btw )?

well if I recorded in the middle of the beertent, I´m pretty sure they can take metal too  it´s just a matter of setting the right input gain on the MD. These kind of mics are made by a company named Soundman, I think, they call them OKM ("Originalkopfmikrofon", German). And they have different models for different uses, like Rock or speech. Might be interesting to find out what capsules they are using.
It is very funny when you walk around with those, everyone thinking you´re listening to music but you are recording them, stealth mics for spying!
