there is also the Vertigosound compressor, which is kinda like the Alan Smart, although with Jensen input iron and discrete vca's for audio and sidechain signal and DRV134 balanced line driver outputs (see circuit board pic on their webpage).

Generally for mono I have used the "standard" (G)SSL on snare and a friend of mine likes ít on a certain singer, seems to work well on special occasions.
