i want to start building my own compressors / limiters / mic pres that can model the qaulity of already existing high end ones. i understand the basics of analog PCB and i know how to solder but i have never followed a schematic before.

can anyone give me some good advice on where to start?

building mic pres i think would be the smartest move but is it the easiest?

This question's been asked a lot around here recently. Spend some time reading through recent threads in the Drawing Board and the Lab.

What you should build mostly depends on what you want/need. Having said that, there are a few relatively simple mic pres out there. If you're not very comfortable reading schematics, consider getting a kit.
