I'm just a retired/disabled old guy sitting in my makeshift basement studio wondering if it's too late to learn how to build some of the stuff I want. For example, is it possible to modify the circuit for the famous LA2a optical compressor circuit to use Roland's NuTubes in place of traditional tubes? I'll also be studying circuits for tube preamps for instrument level applications. Other than that, I don't really know anything about electronics, but I want to learn.

Welcome to the group. It is never too late to learn new stuff. I am well into my 70s and have been learning new things ever since I retired. The great thing about retirement is you can learn anything you like and not what someone else tells you you need to know.

Cheers
