How important is matching modern transistors in 1176?

Hello, everyone,

I recently decided to change a stereo 1176 I built a long time ago to a dual mono version where I would have an A and D in the same 2U chassis. I find that this is much more useful to me than stereo operation, which in the this particular circuit does not really function like one would expect as stereo compressor.

I am using 2n5088's in place of the 2n3707/8's. I got matched FETs for the meter section from Mike. But there are two transistors that supposed to be matched as well. During a recent move, the cheap multimeter that I had solely for matching transistors is now nowhere to be seen. I also want to wrap this up today but there is that part of me that won't allow me to knowingly do something less than optimal (at least for my abilities). So before I go on a treasure hunt or buy another meter, my question is really how important is it to match the two transistors (Q12 and 13)? These are GR Meter Driver section and are arranged similar to an input pair for a discrete op amp and I have been told by someone who as torn apart vintage 2520s that those input pairs did not have the same measurements. In the past I matched these just because but now I am wondering how much a real difference it will make.

Also, I'm lazy and I kinda just want to be done and move on to the next unfinished project.

Thanks!

Paul

The 2n3707 from current production that I used (and this will probably be the same for 5088) were very close regarding hFE and Vbe. However, only on the condition that they are from the same batch! So if they are, I'd say there won't be much difference (if at all)...
