So i was wondering if it is at all possible to build a large format controller for pro tools. I don't need pre's etc so a C|24 is useless and an icon is a ridiculously expensive route.

I'd Probably want a similar feature set to the VENUE Profile desks, all the usual controls, fader, channel select, mute, solo.

So for each channel I'd probably want: Select channel, mute, solo, record enable, make new playlist, then a trim control. This is all with faders of course and maybe a little display to show what channel is what.

Then apart from that, a master fader, an eq section, dynamics, send levels. Of course a button to change banks, and maybe a button to cycle through plugins on a channel.

You get the point. Just wondering if this is even possible?

I hear tell that the ProControl is quite nice. . .
Even if you design another HUI based controller, it will not have the higher control resolution of a digidesign controller.

You might want to take a look at the LC project over at www.ucapps.de. Here is a related discussion right now.
But probably there will be several disadvantages you will have to live with. I haven't investigated it really because I don't use Pro Tools, but a forum search there will tell you pretty fast what's going on.

we got 2 icons at work in 2 mix rooms.  overly priced and their monitor set up is just good enough to be short of the mark. Good idea that was not thought out properly. The pro controls are fairly nice but they do not have as much control as an Icon. the pro controls can be found super cheaply on evilbay these days. The digidesign ethernet connection protocol is something digi will never ever release. I suspect it;s due to the fact that someone would run with it and make something that actually is useful. Until that protocol can be figured out there are limited options as to how to mix in pro tools using a control interface. either you fork over the money and go digi or you do something else via hui emulation. Digi will offer more precise fader moves at expensive cost unless used. hui will be much cheaper but the moves will not be as precise. Now consider this, at one point in time a rep from digi had said they were thinking about ditching the hui protocol as part of pro tools. Now that would be wrong move if you ask me.
