He was born in 1936 in my hometown. He is a local hero among all us music folk. Down the road in the next town over we had Freddy Fender born there.
Both were local heros. So this one hits harder then the others.
My favorite story is how Kris got his big break if you will. He flew in a helicopter to Johnny cash’s house to show him a song he just finished writing. Johnny likes it so much he had to perform it. It also happens to be one of my favorite of Kris’s tunes. Johnny also refused to alter the lyrics when performing it for the Johnny cash show on TV.
(Not the lyric the censors wanted altered but to me one of the best in the song)
“And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearin' dreams of yesterday”
Talk about deep and impactful.
May he R.I.P.
