ive tossed around the idea of trying to find a used one... as what I have right now is rather small and not very sturdy... ofcousre I could make something but as I add up all of the materials I can find some used IAC type benches... (under $200) only problem is shipping is a ******... does anyone know of any sources of used benches say in the south east area? (Im more than willing to drive up to 10 hours to do a pickup...

McMaster Carr has a bunch of pretty great benches, and they have a location in Atlanta.

Search for "Workbench". They have a pretty excellent website.

I got my current bench from Home Depot. Steel frame, a couple drawers, and a big thick top. It was like $150 or so. Not huge, but decent size.

Plus their only a half hour drive from here ( everythings about a half hour drive from here) =)

Trip to Ikea
Buy one of the many desks available
Use it as a basis and mod it

or for DIY - Ikea again for four sturdy round metal legs (that look like they coudl give sewage pipes a run for their money) that are attached with 4 bloody big screws (about £10 for 4 legs)
Then off to the local timber merchant for a big piece of wood - they cut it to size for you - cost me £10 for a massive table
Screw in Legs
Drill holes in wood to attach various trays and containers from Ikea

Shouldn't cost more than £30 in total

(I am off to Ikea at the weekend - will see if anything looks suitable)

An old solid core wood door makes a fine bench top. These can be had for next to nothing from people doing renovations etc. Buy a sheet of 1/8 inch masonite and glue it to the work surface with water soluble contact cement. This makes a good durable finish for the bench top that can be replaced if it gets too ratty looking after time. If you drop Small screws, c-clips and other hardware, they tend to bounce and fly away into another dimension if you top it with arborite.

Heee..eeeeee.eeeeeyyy!!!

-Where'd my bench go....???

Keef

PS. Best thing I ever used: -Go to an office auction place and buy one of them old steel desks. Mine is covered in formica, and has storage drawers down both sides. I think I go it for $55 or something.

I like an all-wood bench, myself... You're just a little less likely to electrocute yourself  I also like my bench to be about waist-high as I stand by it. That's a good height for working, either while standing or sitting on a tall chair.

The best bench I ever had was made by a co-worker's husband, using 2x4s, 4x4s and plywood. He custom-made it to my specs, and it made for a very comfortable/efficient setup. I wish I could've taken it with me when I left that shop.

...this one, Dave?

Damn, you've got a good memory.

No, that's not the bench I was talking about. The bench in the photo still exists (and was kludged together by yours truly using an old kitchen table with prefab shelving for the "instrument bridge"). It's in a little workspace which lives in a rented basement about 30 minutes away from my home. I don't get over there much anymore; I'll probably end up dismantling that setup eventually.

I say DIY!!!! You'll be way happier that way, working everyday on something that is perfectly set up for YOU! I built a brand new one for myself about 6 months ago -- it's 42" high (perfect for standing and/or sitting on a large stool.)

After ten years of living in a total ******** with hardly any windows, I recently moved into a new space with my girlfriend. It's one large room that we live and work in. (She's an artist and costume-maker, so she has a "shop" there too.)

Here's my side of the room:

Electro, that is freaking beautiful! You win the award for coolest-looking bench, hands down.

Is that a Heathkit 0-400V regulated plate (with filament and bias) supply I see on the lower left? I've got one just like it.

Hey, thanks guys! Having a space with windows really does wonders for my general mood, although I never seem to leave the house.

And yeah, that's the Heathkit power supply alright. I love that thing, although half the time I use the enormous Weston tube tester for general power, because it's patchable and has all the meters.

Looks like we have the same HP signal generator as well... Seems like everyone has one of those -- puts out like 30V or something!

Goodnight!
That place is gorgeous. There's just something about wood that I love.
