Hey Guys,

I have a couple of older Marinair trafo's [the very top left type in this photo borrowed from another thread here] that have a yellow/brownish sap like substance leaking out of them.... have googled and searched here, couldn't find any info.

The modules they are in are still working fine... presumably this is something to do with their original construction?

Any info/advice appreciated.

Regards,

Matt

that is just some of the wax they use to pot the transformers,

Marianair used a light wax so that it does not restrict the nickel lams from expanding and contracting with the music, it is kind of like butter, get it warm and it becomes soft, solder some leads and a little will melt into an oil state,

do not use butter to pot transformers, because it is a waste of butter, which could be used on waffles, or a short stack,

Hmmmm interesting....

So conversely, if I was looking to make some authentic early 70's waffles, I could just scrape some NeveTM butter from these modules to give them extra warmth and analog taste?

PS does it necessary follow that a module with copious Neve butter has been overheating compared to a pristine one?? It seems pretty random as to which is which....

Thanks CJ!!  ;D

Hi Matt.

This is kind of funny since that is my picture and  have the same problem with the same transformer!
It is only these more rounded cans i have a problem with, the rectangular cans are more stable.

So it could be a batch or two of these that could have this problem.
It is kind of annoying since the "butter" is extremely sticky and hard to remove.
The only solution i have come up with is the wrap the transformer with clear tape to seal it up again.

Hey API,

I hope you don't mind me appropriating your picture?? :)

Yeah I hadn't gone down the route of trying to clean anything off yet... sounds a bit painful

Do you think this has any effect on the performance of the trafo's? Any of them fail as a result? Just being slightly paranoid as I have lots of modules full of them ;)

Have you repotted any of yours?

Yes, I too have some of the Marinairs with yellow stickers and they are all good.

Regards,

Matt
