I was stuck up my particular tree thinking only about double  voltage swings.

Inductor has low resistance proportional to impedance.  Little DC voltage divider loss, unlike resistor. 
 
Well, since nobody has mentioned them, the Germans had some very nice transistor designs as well.  Also made to replace tube pieces, so they use lots of transformers and other costly bits like rotary switches, inductors, etc.  Tons of schematics at http://audio.kubarth.com/rundfunk/index.cgi
