Not all selenium rectifiers are nescesserily about to explode in your face. The flat Siemens or Adzam ones we used to have here, for exemple, usually hold up really well and can NOS still be viable. The reason that they don't always get replaced (or if replaced, sometimes with NOS), is of course because of their voltage drop, around which these circuits were designed. You will usually need dropping resistors to get the B+ where it (more or less) needs to be.
