I needed a couple of right angled stereo 3.5mm plugs and some stereo cable in order to make up a replacement and spare cable for the headphones I use with my music player during flights, so off I went to Maplin in Croydon. I eventually found the plugs for £1.99 each and then asked the bright young lad behind the counter for the cable. He disappeared for 10 minutes and brought back loudspeaker cable - no, I said - I want stereo audio cable and added that I need it to be as thin as possible. he disappeared again and came back with more speaker cable.

I told him to forget it and just paid for the plugs. Was I asking too much from thuis peabrain???

I remember in the late 80's when the Maplin catalogues came out I used to spend hours looking through at the goldmine of components! Even in the early 90's, it was a real "day out" to go down to the big branch in Leeds and browse the seemingly massive selection of electronic components, enclosures and tools.

Nowadays, the electronics are relegated to the back of the store and the multitude of store nationwide have just become a cocktail of Tandy and Dixons (and where are they now?). Sad sign of the times.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!
I love retail companies that employ people without knowing if they have any idea what the job entails!
I once went to the maplin's counter in Manchester some years ago and asked for 5 metres of mains flex.
I got home, opened the bag to find 5 pieces of flex each measuring 1 metre  ??? - i kid you not!!
