That could be my dodgy layout! I have to really crank it to hear any of that mains him though.

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant the input transformer.  My input transformer on my pre amp is a vintage ADC taken from an old Gates amp.
 
"Room eq wizard" is intended for measuring the room you're in, but it is free(google for it) and has procedures for checking and callibrating your soundcard. with a pad on the input/output, I see no reason you couldnt measure the frequency response of a mic pre (or other processor)working around the programs intended use
