hi,
has anyone here modified a UA la-2a reissue with the vintage utc transformers. (a-10/a-24)? is this a simple thing to do if one has the transformers?

what?

hey, Keef walked right by me at the airort last night.
What's his trip man?

Well, there might be other differences besides the transformers afecting the sound in those older units.

I don't know, I think Steve has heard his fair share of LA2's, no?

(insert pic of 5 zillion racked LA2's here)

theres more variables to the differences between generations of la2a's than just the transformers... the coupling cap plays a significant role in the sound as well...

and I have heard both good and bad sounding "UTC" transformers.. as the QC on them creates variable all to their own. just as ive heard some re-issues that sound good and some bad..

point is.. just swapping out the transformers wont necessarily guarantee a better sound...

then again what do we consider to be better? :)

ok ok... I just realized no one said the word "better" but generally when people want to make changes its for the better :)

indeed

once something is working well and sounding good ... it is very hard to get it sounding better.
Often it just ends up sounding different.
For a specific situation thisd may well be deemed to be sounding better.

That's why forums can spark conflict and the opinions may differ,
yet people could be talking about the same thing ...
just from a different start point or direction.

DO IT ... compare ... and then You will know :green:
then come tell us about it.

I'm just over the rickety bridge, right by the drive with the views... We've got Kayaks... -not kidding!!!

Wanna come and tune up a 670?

Was that you with the big carpet bag standing by the escalator?
You must have traveled first class, because you were one of the first people off.

When you coming back this way?

Shoot, was gonna go salmon fishing in Eureka this weekend, but got stuck kayaking.

Otherwise...I'd be up in a flash.

Call King Salmon Sport Fishing in the "Big City" and get on his boat.
Fly the salmon back here in an igloo and I'll smoke em for ya.

Did you bring your camera? Get some shots of the sheetmetal fold down front panel thingy.
Narma says he used spragues. Can you verify? Thanks!

And be careeful at night, Ferndale is full of witches.
And stay out of the Lolita cheese factory if ya know what's best.

Kayaking the Eel? Cool! Don't fall in, there be real eels in there, and they will nibble on your body parts. But only in the evening.

Are the new LA-2A's built with ccomp resistors?

My buddy used to say "sum of all the parts" over and over again. Meaning while one part doesn't make much difference, the same schematic with different parts, but same values will sound different. One malory cap sounds different than another, one A&B resistor can sound different from the next. Also layout can change the sound, and the fact that an old amp drifts, all the caps and resistors drift a little but after 50 years of use the components value change. That said one component at times can make or break a piece of gear.

When I built my LA-2A I used MF resistors, and Jensen transformers. My LA-2A still works and sounds like an LA-2A, but at the same time it sounds nothing like an LA-2A.

why not look upstream at the coupling caps in the first stage. I built mine with MF's and the standard A-10,A-24 complement and used some very sweet old school sprage Vitamin Q's for the .1uf's. According to sceneria we were flat out to about 40kc after he identified and fixed my wiring blo boo Wil
