I am getting an overloaded distortion sound when connecting the tape deck line out into the preamp tape input.

Kenwood is KX-530.  Fisher is PR-6.  Using a Crown DC150A for power.

Tape deck output impedance is 100K and I'm not sure about the tape input impedance of the Fisher PR-6.  Have the spec sheet, but it isn't apparent what the input impedance is for this unit.

Do I need to add a resistor pad across the Fisher preamp input ?  If so, I am not quite certain how to calculate the value.

The Fisher has a lot of gain so I am not surprised it overloads. Are you sure you need the preamp. Try connecting the Kenwood directly to the Crown.

Cheers

Misapplication.
The Fisher PR-6 is intended for boosting and equalising either a magnetic phonograph cartridge or tape head.
Documentation is available on-line.

Phono preamp to bring naked 5mV mag-phono signal up to line level. The cassette deck already has a similar preamp inside to bring naked 2mV tape-head signal up to line level.

A simple stereo VOLume pot will interface a cassette deck to a DC-150 (or use two hands on the DC-150's knobs). For absolute maximum sound level you *may* need a Line Amp, the "tape" input on a Crown PSL-2, Dyna PAS-4, etc.

Eliminated the PR-6 and now all is well.  Plenty of gain with the DC150A  ...and the sound is nice and clean.

Thanks to all that responded!
