I started this thread because I bought an used (broken) Neumann tlm103 capsule from eBay in order to reskin and put in a mic.

From the photos the membrane was damaged and has the center screw missing.

After having dismantle yesterday I discovered that someone lost the spacing between membrane and backplate.

Some of you probably know that in Neumann tlm103 capsules are glued into front plastic ring.

I made this “dummy” mistake waiting a lot of time before putting my hands on it…

With the spacer I can repair it, without is useless.

Anyone can point me in right direction about the spacer thickness and an idea of how I can make one in an elegant way?

However I don’t want to post the name of the seller on eBay but be aware from a seller from Romania that sell Neumann capsules and watches…

I attached photos of the Neumann capsule and a photo of a spacer inside another Chinese capsule (diameters are different so I can’t use one of them into Neumann).

Thanks

I believe @soliloqueen could help with the spacer. If not, you can use 40 micron thick adhesive tape. Just check specs of known reputable adhesive tape manufacturer. Put tape on the backplate, and cut excess you don’t need. I'm not sure tho if Neumann uses 40 micron with this particular capsule.

These capsules don't use spacing membranes. They're faced with a very high precision lathe front and back. They don't even use spacers between the two back plates. The gap is already in the back plate and you don't need to do anything.

Thank you very much.
Great to know.
I tried to measure it before reskin and borders and backplate seems to same thickness (with a magnifying glass and a metal ruler).
Before wasting a membrane I want to be sure.

This is a good idea, thank you very much for this tip!

The “light” test confirm that doesn’t need a spacer.
Never find another one machined this way until now.

However the backplate seems to be very stressed. There are signs of scratching and in the red circle two holes has a crack over them.
I hope this doesn’t compromise the result after reskin.
However I’m here again to the more experienced over this kind of capsule if glueing is recommended instead of just screw it in place.
If yes, what kind of glue works and doesn’t damage the film?
I see Soyuz use a brush to put glue over their tensioning ring but I don’t remember in which video but it’s on YouTube.
Thanks
