Hello,

I just wired up a 12V torroidal traffo, but the output I get is 14,5 V AC. Is that normal? Isn't 20% off a bit much?

I am going to use it to power my musical fidelity x-cans headphone amp (a non-recording project in between) and I don't have the tools to open it up and have a look at the psu section, do you think it would be any problem using the 14,5V output?

Thanks!

Robert

20% off is normal if the transformer is small. Just look at the transformer datasheets for normal voltage rise with no load.

Don't forget, if there's no load on the power supply, the voltage at the PSU's output will be higher than the transformer is spec'd for. If the transformer is rated just above the current requirement of the device you're powering, it should drop to just about right under load.
