Hi,

Its an 8-track 1" JH-16 with JH-100 transport. It hasn't been used for a year and the capstan was slightly noisy then.

I tried it today and its really noisy. Anyone have experience lubing it/changing bearings?

Some google hits said it can be tricky so don't bother doing it yourself, pfft!

On another note, the 18-pin transport power connector coming from the JH-114 power supply is in bad shape, is that an impossible item to find? Its made by BEAU.

Thanks,
William

I think that the connector is a Cinch/Jones, you should be able to find a replacement.

The bearings, well I've had one go bad, you can remove the motor yourself, but -honestly- unless you're a motor expert, I would NOT try and replace the capstan bearings. By all means take the motor out and send it off for someone else to do. -This is the same as the JH24 and JH110, with the cream-coloured ceramic shaft, -right?

Try precision morotworks, Athan Corporation, JRF electronics or AMP services. Remember, the slightest off-center alignment on the capstan shaft will result in flutter on EVERYTHING. Best by far to send it to a place that does it for a living and can check concentricity, runout and give it a general look-over. A couple of the places I mentioned are highly recommended, all should be capable. You won't save that much doing it yourself, and you could mess things up disproportionally.

Yes its the white-ceramic shaft.

I'm no motor expert, thats for sure. I appreciate the information, I think I will try to fix it myself though, its in my nature and I cannot fight it :p

I have been warned.

I had a similar problem with a JH110 8 track 1 inch..

pulled the capstan motor, cleaned up the brushes and the stator? or whatever that things is the brushes ride on... readjusted them and it worked perfect..

Scenaria,

I'd like to probe your brain if you don't mind...

I took out the capstan motor and its a Torque Systems MH-3210-040A

the top bearing is a German-made roller-element bearing and the inner ring is very rusty, I'm pretty sure the squeaking comes from that bearing

I am going to try and pull off the metal cap and regrease it, see if that helps

Any of that sound familiar?

Oh and if I spin the shaft in the CW direction, I get the horrible squeak
I am looking to cure. In the CCW direction, it makes a clicking sound, Im hoping thats normal, maybe something in the tach on the bottom.
