blue for cardoid, red for multipattern

pretty good idea, and a good approach. but why out of the grill instead of just a red/blue led flush mounted in the body? obviously trying to be to 'techy'. now instead of a good idea they totally are going to have 2 groups of people, ones that love it, and ones that hate it. rather than a happy medium.

and there i go over analyzing everything again.

EDIT:
that mic sells for 4500$!!!!! good grief.

I was thinking about this...
And from the control room you are going to see the polarity...
So - if the PSU and dials were in the control room - you could have a quick glance to see the polarity by ooking at the colour
But thinking this through - you have the blooming dial in front of you ..

So... seems like a gimmick then

true, but how often are your changing patters, and if youve got a intern, then you just give them orders to go fix it. :green:

i would find it hard to sing to that one.. maybe if it was purple :)

Neither love nor hate, depends on sound. IMHO it looks kinda 'gimmicky', almost didn't read description. Maybe a nice mic besides the lights. The design marketing could work in reverse if a quality mic...
capsule? tube? trafo?
If it was Nady etc and low $, that's a different story, selling like hotcakes i bet.

Maybe more important is what kind of vibe it creates for the vocalist/other user, especially clients. I mean, it's more about the performance, no matter how great the mic. Maybe some would like to sing into a light (like Poletergeist), and do it better, others would stay away even if it sounded great. But that is cutting the market down. Probably always risky to do 'standout' designs... especially as in this case, the lights have no sonic function, just an indicator. And obviously you need hot-swap leds for studio color-coordination and mood-setting. not to sound dumb, but i notice red light sets people on edge sometimes. good for metal albums?

Looks like a 'legitimate studio' can try it out. One of the UK guys could get a demo.

valve: Telefunken AC701
Frequency Range: 20hz-18khz
Output Impedance: 200 ohms

Piccies of the capsule AND the tramsformer AND the PCB here...

Call me a traditionalist, but the only place for LEDs in a mic is behind the tube, to accentuate the glow.

But for that mic, I could imagine some fun options. Why not use a 3-LED color organ scheme, so you can test for placebo effect? "Sure, let me warm that mic's sound up a bit" and dial in more red and yellow. Or have it pulse with the beat.

Or... hey, this is a neat idea - have a 3-LED color organ as a VU meter! Then the talent can get visual feedback on their distance and SPL. Or for when you're recording by yourself, you could watch your levels in the mic instead of having to waste concentration on watching the real meter from across the room.

The only 'happy medium' that's ever been any good is "Miss Cleo" on Prozac...

Actually it's three groups of people: ones that love it, ones that hate it and ones that can afford it.

yes alot of u47 clones but I don't think many get it right. This looks like it might be correct.

I used the Mk1 version of this mike some years ago. It blew my ears - outstanding - unbelievable!!! It´s worth every cent of the price. It left all the other N*eumann TLM mikes available in that particular session sound like a piece of catshit. People whoever can afford this mike: go for it.
cheers

it's gimmicky

but it's cool

maybe i'll put LEDs in my next mic that don't signify anything just for the sake of looking cool.

the capsule kind of looks like how a MBHO is built.

MBHO makes some nice capsules!

I see one thing in the PCB picture I would change.
If you don't like the glow, snip-snip. Everyone's trying to build a U47 clone these days.... Which submini tube does that look like? Maybe a 5702?
telefunken ac701 - whatever that means....

It means hard to find, except on german evilbay where I saw some of them last week.
I read some times ago that this tube can be replaced by anotherone which is available but the mod needs another plug and cable since there´s another voltage needes. check this:

ok, it´s about VF14 but might be helpful for some in here anyway

that is no ac701 tube no grid wire at the top.

I think the leads are to short. Short wires can cause metal to glass seal stress problems from soldering and mechanical stress.

I think I see 7 leads from the tube anybody else count them? I would guess a mini pentode of some type.

I wondered if it has EIGHT legs like the 5840 etc, and one is wired behind out of sight.....

The internal constructions does not look like the 5840s I have, though.
