Having thought about this issue and having no recent experience in VCA's, I'd like to inject a few ideas which may be obvious or worthless or both:
1. DSA uses micro controller, Analog Devices etc like AD5235 etc. Some coding required.
2. VVA analog devices (??)
3. LED's are logarithmic and current controlled devices, voltage control would not be so linear
4. Some opto-feedback circuits use a dual element device, one for the control signal the other for feedback. (Long time ago)

5. PIN diode attenuator, often used in RF as resistive element.
6. https://www.analog.com/en/resources...ltage-to-control-a-digital-potentiometer.html
7. The resistive element would never be the same as a typical resistor, wether CdS, a vacuum tube or some silicon. Avoiding PN junctions and rectification effects ought to be a high priority.
