I'm starting a new project to change the look of one of my SM7Bs. I will do a custom paint job on the metal body parts, maybe even powder coating them. I've already decided to order some custom-colored foam pop filters. I also want to replace the two tightening nuts with custom shapes. I've googled to try and find out the thread measurements for the posts the nuts tighten down on. I can't find the thread dimensions. Is it metric? M4, M5 etc. I've looked on the Shure support website, but nothing. I've found the replacement assembly online, but they don't actually provide any dimensional data, and I want to create my own solution anyway. I was getting ready to take the nut down to my local hardware store and try screwing it onto one of the thread-size measuring tools, but before I did, I thought I would ask the very knowledgeable folks in the forum because, you know, fun and engagement.

I have a Chinese SM7b that I'm looking to authenticate with a genuine cartridge. I also want to replace that sorry arse cable etc.

As long as it's an actual Shure product and not a knock-off, the ones made in China are are just as 'genuine' as those made in Mexico; they are made the same way, and recieve the same QC from Shure.

This is a knock off knock off. $50 plus to my door and putting a real cartridge in it will get me the sound at a saving. Plus it makes me feel like I DIYed it somehow.

Not sure if you’ll actually save any money on that deal. The legitimate cartridge costs about $250 and the cable/connector aren’t free. Plus your time and energy…

Would have been most helpful if you'd said it was a knock-off in the first post.
Remember when I said Chinese SM7b. What I didn't know was that Shure was outsourcing the SM7b manufacture to the Chinese. Which is probably why they are cloning it now. Trying to maximize profits, lol.

$210.40 at Full Compass so saving is in the $180 arena. Swapping of the cable is cosmetic and I have plenty of choice quality stuff laying around. Time I have plenty of. And I have a mountain of mics so this is not a priority, but I will get around to it eventually.

Take the yoke to a well-stocked hardware store and try on different nuts till you find what fits.

I doubt they're metric; it's an old US design (now made in China and Mexico).
Excellent point about likely not metric. Regarding the local hardware store this was always my plan but, as I did say in my post, I thought I would pick the brains of the very knowledgeable forum members because… for fun and engagement. And look at all the engagement and dare I say “fun” being had through sharing knowledge and experience (thank you k brown) OR others just pointing out the obvious like I’m some kind of idiot child (khron you rascal you) I’ll have you know I’m not a child… so your “retortious implecationious” (made up WB latin) is only partially correct yet still so very, very (gasp) painful. Et tu brute? Et tu…

Undo one and measure (with calipers, or even a ruler)?
Sky? Blue? Ribbing aside. Is it not fair to say that it’s not just the yoke diameter but also the thread size? Wow, that almost sounds dirty. Hmmm, “It’s not just the size of your yoke. It’s how you thread it.” … needs work. I think maybe I’ll take this one on the road to massage it a little. That’s what she sa… ok stopping now. But yes you are right I can caliper the yoke. Wow that sounds dirty too!

SM7 is one of my favorite mics. You can get them used for $150 on ebay and they are built to last. I have 6 from the 1980s
I do think the early 'made in the USA' SM7 sound different. I wish I had a sm7b to post a comparison. But I got rid of my sm7b when I got the first sm7
(which I regret, the sm7b has a tighter sound than the sm7 which is cool sometimes)
