Is it possible to 'butt solder' two pieces of sheet metal together?  I'm wanting to join two DBX patchbays front to rear (to make one indestructible TRS patchbay loaded with panel mount jacks).  I've got all the gear for the project, but one thing I don't have in my shed is a mig/tig welder - just curious if I can avoid needing one altogether in this instance?

Solder will at least need lap joints, not butt joints. Find some with a TIG welder, and have him tack the cases in a few places.
If you are going the soldering way, be aware that you have to use corrosive flux and it will be everywhere. Welding is easy, clean off the coating on a few places, no flux required. I'd even try it with the components still in the cases with TIG (but do not weld it all around, 10mm on each side, 2x10mm top side, 2x10mm bottom plate).

I ended up taking them to a local car garage and he tack welded them together for free.  Great!  Saved me a few dollars!

They are rack mount, why not just mount them in a rack?

It still is rack mounted.  I also wanted panel mounted jacks front and rear so I could build a bulletproof unit.  Patch bays are built to a price point, unfortunately I wasn't happy with the build quality of any that I found.

While I wouldn't bother with anything but welding if strength is needed,  but some JB weld could do the job in a pinch.
