Hey GUys,
Stupid question.
But I want to purchase the types of pots and knobs that you find on teh neve and ssl console. the ones that have a very thin metal shaft and the knobs that you have to pop the dustcap off to unscrew.
trouble is, I cant seem to find them or what their type is called?

The "fixing" you are describing is called a "collet" fixing.

They have through fixings with a ring bolt on them and also ones that have a screw at the end.  The through fixings are used most of the time and allow a concentric shaft to pop out the middle.  The screw ones don't.

Search on ebay, you will see some examples and maybe that is what you want.

Collet knob.

I use a piece of brass tubing ground with two little tongues and a flat section.  Works fine.

I love collet knobs, perfectly adjustable work with flatted d or round or even split spline in a pinch

In Europe I've bought Elma and Sifam knobs. A couple of months ago I found a company
in the States called Selco with some nice collet knobs. I bought directly from them and it turned
out cheaper then buying from here (Sweden). You have to buy for at least $50.
Of course you can find some cheaper alternatives to Elma and Sifam but the ones I needed
was hard to find.
