I just picked up an Old Thordarson 21F27 "filament transformer"
117v 60hz Primary
26.5v 0.6A Secondary

I'm guessing it is from back in the pre solid state days when the only thing you would use such a low voltage for was heaters that's why it is called a filament transformer. Inform me if I'm wrong.

Would this work for the "Royer mod" power supply? I am planing on moding two 2001s and building one PS to power them both. This Xformer is only rated at .6 amps. I can't see the 5840's puling a lot of current, but I'm not sure about the whole voltage tripling thing the PS does.

I picked this up for a couple bucks, so I'm hoping it will work.

The "filament transformer" this is just an old habbit. You can still buy them, though they are seldom used for filaments.

If you use a voltage tripler, you will need a transformer with three times the current rating. So I guess 600mA should be more than enough.

hmmm, might not be a good idea for a mic supply. those "heater" transformers usually do not have an electrostatic shield, since they are meant for cheap and dirty heater power. this means all the crap on the line will get into your secondry a lot easier.
but before you use it for a sinker for lake trout, give it a whirl.
cheack for a shield pin or lead which gets grounded.

what are you shooting for? a phantom supply only?
you would only need a doubler with 26 volts.

The secondary does have a center tap, I'll try and see if it'll work before I start drilling holes in the chassis

I'm doing the Royer mod for the MXL 2001. It has a voltage tripler in the PS to get the B+ up to around 100v.
