Hey guys,

Does anyone know exact model number and brand of encoders Presonus installs in their StudioLive digital consoles?

I have one broken rotary encoder I have to replace. I contacted Presonus and they don't reply (dhhh....) on my emails.

So I'll try a different route - find this encoder for myself and just replace it. If they respond in the meantime - cool - but I don't want to wait for ages and leave my console semi-broken until they do.

There's probably a manufacturer and model no. floating around the net, and I'm trying to track it and find where I can order it.

Anyone can help me?

:)

thnx

Small update and cry for help!

I have found out what is the manufacturer number for this encoder!
ALPHA 122-RV122f-B2.5k-A

But now I need to locate a dealer in europe who can supply me with two of these pieces!
Local distributor here in Croatia said that it will take them at least one month to get those encoders. That's too much! Especially since they can't give no guarantee that it will be done in "just" one month! It's for a console used in a audio engineering school where I work at that got broken. We can't just stop doing exercises and wait for this encoder to be replaced! No excuses in front of paying customers (students)!!

So what I'm asking for?
Is there anybody here who can point me to some european (or even worldwide) retailer who can supply this specific encoder?
I tried regular "big ones" like Farnell, RS, Mouser... none of them stock this item.
Anyone know some Presonus service shop that can sell those? Local shop? Any shop!!
Help!!

:)

That's not an encoder. I think it's a 2.5k pot. I can't find any data sheet for it.

Yes, that's what confuses me!
Alpha uses letters RE in the name to identify encoders, and RV for pots.
I believe this is encoder, though it has RV letters, since it has unlimited turns and it is used in a position to control multiple parameters in digital console's "fat channel". I wonder how could they use pot for that function? I'm confused...

While I do not know what they are doing inside. There are modern cheap micro controllers with 10 or more A/D convertors built inside. They could easily read DC off the pot to effect control data.

The mechanical end stops in a cheap panel pot are separate from the resistive element so a pot could be made to rotate freely through 360" by just eliminating them, while I would expect a true digital encoder to be easier to apply. The digital encoder is always sending relative up/down information, while a pot would provide absolute information that the processing would have to translate to up.down relative information.

The pot for encoder substitution provides some mechanical position memory, for better or worse in console control ergonomics. I would imagine for worse.

I have sent many emails, and my boss did a lot of phone calls!
Here's the situation so far:
I have contacted european main distributor for Alpha and they politely directed me towards their main retailer - mouser. When I mentioned in an email to mouser that this person from Alpha's distributor said that, mouser representative was very kind and cooperative. This item is unknown to them, but he will find out directly from Alpha and email me.
But also, FullCompas suprised me! They first responded that they don't ship overseas, but in an email few hours later they sent me a price quote and agreed to bend the rules and FedEx it around globe. Yes, the price is spicy since it's FedEx, but it's very nice of Full Compass!
My boss persuaded local Presonus distributor to give us replacement console until this situation doesn't sort out. So we have more time to get the replacement. It's not that hectic anymore!
I'll see in next few working days if the kind gentleman from Mouser has any (good) news, if not we'll probably take it from Full Compass.
When I get this item (I've stopped saying pot or encoder since I don't know anymore what is it!!), I'll test to find out if it actually is a potentiometer or what. I'm still confused.
