hi,
i am thinking of putting together a makeshift "console" that is essentially an 86" desk frame made of 2x4's serving as rack rails stuffed with outboard gear and summed together with patchbay/analog sum bus. (about 68U rack slots required for all eq/compression/effects) the user will have a space to sit in the middle. trying to make it so that i have access to the gear like a mix desk. to do this in an 86" desk i need to rack everything vertically (front panels of all gear facing the ceiling) on the left and right side of the user. kind of a frankenstein sort of thing but for me i think it will work.
anyone think its a bad idea to rack good outboard gear vertically? (or any gear for that matter) i see a lot of mastering guys rack stuff at a pretty steep angles at their custom desks. but i rarely see stuff sitting all the way vertical. the only thing i can think of is the effect of gravity and making sure nothing comes loose inside any of the gear. on older gear (pultecs etc) i should probably make sure everything is mounted pretty well inside. good outboard is usually built so well i cant see this being an issue. however, is there something else i am not thinking of? this is about 35 g's or so of outboard so i dont want to put anything at risk.
going to start making the desk soon. should i rethink this or does it sound ok? any feedback appreciated.
