Nice info... This is from the days when manufacturers posted real specs and information instead of vague nonsense. RCA was always one of the best in that regard

A quick Google check shows that both transistor types are available from some distributors.

These are still pretty common transistors and on the last page of the AES printout, which I didn't upload, they had a graph showing temperature stability for several unnamed transistors. They were pretty emphatic that only the 2N4249 could provide the stability required in this design. The beauty of this unit is it's simplicity and that seems to lend to the quality of it's sound.
