I racked some SSL 4000 (262) EQ's and did not use "center tapped" pots.  Worked fine for me, except that the knobs had to be slightly adjusted for "0" center.
I had some "sister" boards made that held the pots and mic pre, and used a card edge connector similar to the SSL motherboard arrangement.

Just my $0.02.

i havnt has any time to get any further with this recently but thought anyone following this thread might want to know SSL have started selling spares, including pots here:

I notice that the pots they sell have flats on the shafts (as opposed to round shafts) - does this mean SSL have gone for cheaper push-on knobs rather than collett knobs, maybe even ended their association with Sifam after all these years?

i read somewhere that Sifam had shut down, dunno how true that is.
