Hey, I know this is an old thread and any comment´feel rusty but..
The 1178 is a great tool, I use both the 1176 (DIY) one and the 1178.
As a gain red. device they react almost the same but as SSL-t. says its
a different constr. The 1178 use the 5566 Dil double fet and is perhaps
the only useful way to make a real stereo comp/lim if you compare
it to the 1176. The linearity between two fet´s in two different boxes over
10 dB gainred. is hard.
I think in opposite to SSL-t. that the 600 ohms T-bridge is nothing to seek for if your not at the end of a telephone line. If you normally put + 29dBu
at the front I think you should concider another way of working, or use the gainpot...
at the delivering device. Show me which console that put +29dB out at the
insert point?
The really sounding difference between the seeked blackface models and the new ones (not the reissued) is the class A output amp and to put
as in the DIY ónes a Tx at the front instead of the 5532. It make´s
a sweet blend and bottom.
To answer your question- no I dont think there is any PC-board made of
the 1178 and if you can live with those nonlinearities with two 1176 as
a stereo device. I think you should go for that. I have 8 channels going
including my 1178 (Org) and I´m very pleased.
Cheers Bo
