Crack open a DIP TL074. It is 99% epoxy with a tiny grain of sand inside. The SMD just gives you less epoxy.

Wow, we aren't going to have a discussion about whether or not the additional epoxy changes the thermal characteristics of the device? effects of quiescent temp on bias point? Etc?

Spec sheets say thermal impedance is different, btw...

Just food for thought... :thumb:

If we think that way, we come in todays japanese patent with a can of 2L with capacity of 20L? Kinda of science fiction :green: Why to DIY discrete blocks? We can go with op-amp :!: And my impression is that , how you small the part, thats how you "small" the sound  I know that i'm sounding like philosopher but ask your girlfriend  She will certainly agree

But counter-intuitively, some SMDs have great dissipation (when soldered on a board with large traces). The fat-DIP is actually an impediment to getting heat out of the chip.
