Hi Everyone,

I am new here... as of about 15 minutes ago, actually. First, congrats on a great forum - there's tons of amazing info here.

I am relatively new to the DIY thing, with the exception of the basic know-how of being an audio engineer (ie. soldering cables), but I'm looking at doing some small projects to work towards building an SSL clone and a Matchless clone.

- What are some good beginner projects?

- How difficult is it to build an SSL clone and/or a guitar amp? Are these really advanced projects or is it reasonable to shoot to try them out in the relatively near future?

- Any idea of approximate costs to build an SSL clone and/or a Matchless clone?

Thanks so much in advance!!

Where do you live? (add your location in your profile)... I think the cost of certain projects will go up or down depending. In the states, I build SSL clones for $250-$300, depending on meter choice and panel art.

I updated my profile...

But in answer to your question - Toronto, Canada. However, I am fluent in the US dollar!

Thanks for the quick response!

I don't think you'll find much info on Matchless amps here. You might want to try www.18watt.com or www.ax84.com

The cost for building a Matchless depends on which one you want to build, and what all you want to include.

The Matchless Spitfire is relatively simple: Maybe $250 for an amp excluding any enclosure or speaker cabinet.

The more complicated amps will increase in cost with the addition of things like a choke, more tubes, etc.

If you want to get fancy with faceplates, speaker grill coth, tolex, good cabinets, nice speaker, etc. you can run into the $800 range pretty easily.

DIY stompboxes make good first projects as they are not too expensive, can be completed fairly quickly, and are good practice for your pc-board soldering skills. Check out www.generalguitargadgets.com for some pre-made pc-boards. Also, smallbear electronics has lots of parts especially for making stompboxes.
