Hi there all you people of great knowledge  :p

My soundcraft tape machine has developed a weird mechanical noise that I can't seem to find the source of.

Has anyone experienced something similar?
I know that these machines are known for a crappy transport but it didn't use to be this loud. Its almost sound like the tape is flapping against something but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Appreciate any help.

Oh another thing, does anyone have a pdf of the manual for the this machine?

Big thanks!

Some general things.  Are you using older tape that could be getting sticky?  Check for high tension.  Perhaps a sensor or reel motor amp or mechanical brake band problem.  These machines were Finikey. You also need fish scales and or tentelometer and a voltmeter to Check tension.  you can tell by feeling tension with the side of you finger.    Look for oxide shed on lifters. Heads, guides.  Also wear patterns on heads.  There are many possible causes.  I don't have a manual.

Sounds like sticky schmutz on the pinch roller. I can see the tape backing jerking in rythym. Clean the pinch roller. If you don't have Athan cleaner then order some and in the meantime put a widdy bit of Dawn or Fairy on a paper towel lightly, very lightly!, dampened with  water and gently clean the surface of the pinch roller.
There should be no dripping liquid involved. It is a moist, not a wet cleaning..

It also appears that the edge of tape is stressed at the lower point of the take up guide roller, so don't overlook needing transport alignment as well. Tape is way too expensive these days to subject it to that sort of aggressive wear & tear.

..use stethoscope for this sort of noise-tracing, e.g.:
