Hi all,

Has anyone out there had their SSL quad comp modified by having a hi-pass filter inserted on the comp?s side chain?

We?d be interested in doing this mod and so we were wondering if anyone had already done it before?

Any info is welcome,
Is this a complex procedure?
Does anyone have schematics for this mod?

Regards,
Greg

it can be done, but don't expect it to be easy. requires you to do the thinking for yourself - and to mod the "sleeping dog" center section in the console. I wouldn't try it myself.

Hi-
I just discovered this forum - looks like a great place!

At some point in history, the owner of the studio I work at acquired a spare SSL 4K center section. I'm not sure where he got it or what he had planned for it, but it sat collecting dust for a long time. So I turned it into a parts donor. One of the projects I used its parts for was a stand alone SSL bus compressor for our mastering room. We later added a sweepable high-pass filter to the sidechain. I just copied the filter circuit from an SSL stereo channel, and built it out on a little perfboard (we didn't need a quad filter - we're only using it as a stereo compressor). The main advantage to doing it that way, besides being quick and easy, is that we could get the frequency pot from SSL (where else could we get an odd-value, four wafer pot?). It works great - really adds a lot of flexibility to the unit. We had lots of room to work with, though. As previously mentioned, it would be quite a trick to fit a mod like that into the center section of a console!

How about just bringing the audio input to the sidechain out to the patchbay as an insert point? You could then insert any filter you wanted.

It would probably be easier, cheaper and less time consuming to just build a GSSL with the SC filter mod and just insert that in the path. That way you can drag it to other studios with you. Leave the SSL one alone so you don't have to worry about it if you try to get rid of it.

my 2 cents.
