Hey guys,
for a clients desk i need to design a talkback micpre. The mic will be a dynamic with 200 Ohms output. Can someone point me towards an easy to breadboard design? I would prefer something with transistors instead of ics. Thanks!

The desks owner hates ics 🤷‍♂️ any suggestions?

Feel free to suggest an ic circuit as well. Maybe i can convince him….

Ill talk to him again…. Something like neumann 474a without transformers would be nice. It has a built in limiter. Maybe we should just buy one. They arent that expensive.

I just went through a similar exercise due to an aging console talkback amp dying. I thought about building one or integrating or of the zillions of off-the-shelf communication boxes. Ultimately I went for the repair of the built-in system (based on obsolete and poor-performing circuits) because the integrated system is extremely useful. It routes to many different console cue and studio sends and slates, it dims the desk automatically, it can be latched, it has provision for foot switch and wireless remote, etc…

For external solutions, you could use just about any preamp you like, but then you require a way to inject the signal into the cues send(s), a decent on/off solution, and maybe a DIM trigger, etc.

I often simply plug an SM57 into a preamp and then to an aux in my DAW and use the plug-in MuteOmatic to simplify my talkback and provide a good sound signal to the artist.

So many solutions but none are ideal….

I don't waste my high-end mics on talkback. On that field Uli B. justifiedly comes into play! My talkbacks are a bunch of Behringer mics / compressors / gates and a presonus 8 ch preamp if I recall correctly.

Clone a Neve 1272 😏
Silly idea, but then again...

You could make an economical "Neve inspired" preamp using an input transformer (OEP or Neutrik are perfectly good here) and a simple 3-transistor gain stage (e.g. the Neve BA183NV, you could DIY or get one from JLM).

Or you could persuade your client that NE5532s are so old-school they're virtually not ICs any more.
