Hi everyone (and sorry if my English is not as good as I wish it was!),
I'm just coming in, looking for some advice. Here's my concern: I don't have the technical knowledge and skills to build or take care of my own equipment like you guys, and I'm planning to buy a 1176 and a LA-3A.
So, prior to having the comps being shipped to France, I'd like to have someone test and service them, do whatever is needed to make sure they will sound the way they're supposed to. Could you recommend people in the States who will do a top job for a fair price?
Many thanks in advance,
Gerard

If they are already in the US, you could ship them to me.
in Nashville.

I will check and or repair as needed. I keep spares for both.

Just of the top of my head - based on the info I have read and the names that keep popping up

Eddie Ciletti in the US

John Klett in the US

In Paris
Funky Junk

In Sweden
Bo Hansen

There are probably loads of members of this forum who can also do the work - but are a bit retiscent about coming forward

Do a search on the model numbers on this site - look at the people who respond - check their profiles and web sites...

One thing I think will help people here is only posting links to companys that you have used and were happy with. I like Klaus's forum rules

Thanks uk. I will do this search.
Gus, I agree with what you say as a general rule. On the other hand, I don't think one suggesting people like Eddie Ciletti or John Klett without having been their customer is taking a big chance. At least as far as the job quality is concerned...

... people like Eddie Ciletti or John Klett ...

people like ??
what are people like ?

or for that matter people like Kev.

perhaps it's not cool to single people out if a statement it incomplete or inconclusive.

Well, it looks like I've said something appearing like being offensive... if so, please believe me it was not intended. Remember first thing I said was to comment my lack of English mastering.
My understanding of gus's post, is that uk should not have give Eddie's and john's addresses unless he had formely been one of their customers. Right?
In my reply I was just trying to say that these guys experience and authority is established well enough so one doesn't need to know them personally to recommend them. Is there anything wrong here?
Or maybe is it me who doesn't understand your post Kev. So please, tell it again using other words...
Is my English that bad that I should not post here?

I think it is in everyone best interest when giving advice to have good backing for that advice. The stuff one posts on the web will be around along time and will/might be used against you at sometime.

I run what I post thur a filter type thinking, there has been a few times I just erased a post I was working on. I hope my posts come across as showing I have done an experiment or test and I am not just posting something I read from a book.

I read to many things on the web and in books that in real life were different. I sometimes think only a few people realy have a clue on condenser microphones. I know I have much more to learn but what I have learned so far tells me not to believe a review of an microphone on the web or in mags I will read it and file it away and then buy or try to find a sample to hear for myself. I have alot more microphones to hear.

FWIW the u47 type microphones without a M7 K47 or M9 capsule I have a gefell capsule with a M7 a K67/87 does not sound like that. They work different the air gap between the backplate changes stuff more than you might think at first. Then there is the bias circuit and the lam alloy the mesh size and layers (take a layer or two out of a cheap china grill to learn a little)

I think most all of the post here are wanting to help people. I think Klaus's rules are good ones for everyone when refering someone to a company for work.

FWIW I have a capsule out to get reskinned. I will not post about how good or bad it is until I tryt it. A person I trust refered the capsule rebuilder to me.

The more I learn about the pro audio world the more it seems to be a bad soap opera.

It's all good,

I agree with what Gus has said and you too Arthur.
I was just using the opportunity to illustrate a point about people and reputations. It is too easy around forums like this, to get into a position where through a comedy of errors and mis-understandings that a point of view can become gospel.

must go now  (camera remote fault!) but I'll be back with a better explanation ... I hope/think

I'm back.

... suggesting people like Eddie Ciletti or John Klett without having been their customer is taking a big chance.
absolutely
suggesting anybody without having first hand knowledge could be taking a chance.
but also grouping Eddie and John together may also mis-lead if the sentence doesn't have an obvious context. People who make a living as a technician like Eddie or John ... blah blah ...
or Businessmen like Eddie or John ....

The very next sentence referred to job quality and I didn't want any interpretation reflective of Eddie's or John's quality of work.
... and to get even more anal about it perhaps Eddie and John are not alike at all in any respect.
:green:
Apart from being Technicians and have Web Sites and write Articles about Recording Equipment and a dozen other things ....

We should just be a little more tolerant and careful when we single out specific people ... yes even Pat M.
(shut up cj - :green: )

Just let Kev ramble on, in a world of his own and he'll eventually shut up.

Honestly, it is all good

Kev, I, too, agree. The way I see it, we're talking here of the marketing/publicity efficiency:
Eddie and John get a lot of exposition. Which gives them a status.
The consequence is, when a guy like me asks for techs recommendations on a forum like this one, it's not a big surprise that sooner or later their name gets a mention. This is the way it works!
And I have to admit that I thought at first it was only legitimate, because I see their name everywhere, and "fame" gives authority upon people who are not in the know.
Now, when I think twice, I know this authority is in no way a garantee the job will be well done and/or I'll be happy with my relationship as a client with one of these guys. The real man might be quite different from his public image.
Another thing is, these two people who are somehow equal in "fame", might be very different one from the other in real life...
So Gus is right when he says we should only talk of things (or people in this instance) we know by personal experience. And still, there's no garantee that ones experience will match someone else's ...
I guess that's all I have to say on this matter.

Now, here I am again with my request! :?
Still Looking for a tech to service a 1176 and a LA-3A. So who knows someone he would highly recommend from a personal experience?
You can recommend yourself too. In this case, I'll have to make up my mind through our communication and your previous posts. If you're too shy, feel free to PM me.
As I'm typing, I'm asking myself if it is correct to propose a job on this forum. I'm not familiar with the posting rules, so if I'm doing something wrong, let me know (without flamming please!)
Anyway, thanks to everybody, I appreciate being there
... You can recommend yourself too.
:green:
I think I'm just a little far away and out of the loop to be of service for this one.

I think it was Dave (soundguy) who was recently lamenting about this sort of thing. PM him and ask if he even found a satisfying solution.

A note to finish on :
you probably want someone who not only is capable on pro audio gear but has a pre-dispostion to not only service but to give Love and Care to these old units. These people often have parts on the shelf and are full of ideas and once you start then off just wont shut up about Urie and Neve and API and racking and power supplies and model numbers ....
:green:
they never shut up
