The transformer on my M221A was also defective. I successfully swapped it for an AMI T28. Compared to my other two M221A with original transformer, the bass is a little more pronounced and the sensitivity is 2 dB higher. - By the way, a Hiller T14 transformer is installed in my M221, the predecessor of the M221A. - The transformer on the M221A could be changed without complete disassembly, you just have to carefully screw the two threaded rods one turn at a time until they are both unscrewed from the base. To be on the safe side, I kept a fairly long stretch of cable from the transformer, which doesn't look that nice, but is helpful if you need to change something on the microphone.
