Probably not telling many what they don’t already know but Austrian Audio’s PolarDesigner is a very interesting free plugin that works with dual output microphones to permit frequency dependent polar pattern manipulation.

Find it here
It's somewhat surprising that there isn't a toolkit and robust community around sharing profiles of different microphones as sources and targets, most simply for frequency response but also polar patterns.

By comparison there are huge volumes of sampled reverbs for convolution reverb out there, and in the guitar world there are endless profiles of amps and cabinets.

I was trying to hold my tongue and not gush over PolarDesigner but I shall no more. Kidding, but I truly find it far more interesting than predefined mic models. I didn't expect that going into it, but despite having the Edge models and Sphere available I only ever use those for previewing, always use AA PD for my actual mixes. The ability to alter polar pattern per frequency band is huge and has a ton of real world advantages. It accomplishes things not possible with traditional approaches (i.e. EQ).

When I started testing it I first tried matching the sound of some Edge modeled mics. Was simple to get there by ear. Then I tried matching other mice I had on hand by ear, same result. Then I realized focusing on matching and modeling missed the point and starting creating idealized responses for the specific song context, and that's where the magic is.

Okay, I'll stop, but I am a fan of that one. The obvious drawback with any dual channel solutions are the workflow challenges if dealing with two channels, otherwise that would always be my go to for vocals and acoustic at least.

I purchased a Flat 47 capsule from Arienne Audio this past Sunday which they said was in stock but hasn't shipped yet. When I receive it I'll install it in my early Rode NT1 and compare it to another one I have of the same vintage.

Are you 1000000% positive you meant to post this in THIS thread, and not another one? Like, perhaps, this one? Just speculating... 🤷‍♂️
