varimu comps and led GR meter

I have been toying with the idea of using a led meter for a varimu compressor gain reduction meter... I could use the control voltage driving something like the LM391x ICs, or maybe come with a led current meter to measure cathode current, like it has always been done in old analog current meters and varimu compressor circuits... But wouldn´t a current led meter in series with the cathode without add much distortion? Another option would be to measure the voltage around plate resitors, if I don´t wanna load the control voltage down with anything other than the grids and input transformer secondary... Any thoughts about it in general?

Small resistance in cathode, sample voltage across it, amplify that voltage as necessary. Easy!

Note that the relation between that voltage and gain reduction is inverse.
